Meeting of the megachurches
Meeting of the megachurches
There has been a lot of controversy about churches canceling worship on Christmas Sunday. I think that this article is a good response to that contraversy. Bill Hybels, pastor of Willow Creek, is one of the pastors of churches that is planning on not having worship on Christmas Sunday. They have 20 services scheduled for the week before Christmas and have a Christmas worship DVD that can be shared with non-Christians family and friends on Christmas day. This, of course, has cause a lot of controversy.
Bill Hybels has been a part of a group of eight mega-church pastors that has been meeting over the past year to try and build relationship among megachurches in the Chicago area and to see how they can partner in ministry and relationship. During the meeting last week, Bill Hybels mentioned the contraversy and James Meeks, pastor of Salem Baptist Church (the largest African American church in the Chicago area), invited him to come and preach for Christmas Sunday. Pastor Hybels checked with his family and confirmed with Pastor Meeks.
This is a good example of allowing churches to make their own decisions and good things happening.
By the way Bill Hybels is in Zambia filming part of the Christmas DVD at an AIDS hospice. He is also filming a sermon that will be shown at Willow Creek this weekend. They are calling it Christmas on Location.
